The Work Goes On.......

We are now into our first week of work on the kitchen remodel. As expected the project is growing!

We took out our flat, low ceiling and are installing a much higher cathedral ceiling which is tons of work. My husband is now installing the additional rafters we will need to support the new ceiling and planning the new lighting. We are fortunate to have a huge attic that you can actually walk through, so space is no problem.

As expected, also, I am struggling with the mess and my mind constantly is working to create ways to eliminate as much mess as possible. The porch has become a haven for me as I can't actually help that much with the physical work.

My job now is to find a chandelier for over the kitchen sink....most of the ones I like are too large. I consulted a kitchen designer but could tell, almost immediately, that I need to do what is right for us. I do not want a 'sleek' kitchen. Yes, I want the modern conveniences but I want the kitchen to be warm and cozy like the rest of our cottage. Ron said I needed to trust my own design abilities....and so, I shall.

I probably will not post many pictures of the actual mess....that is not my style and I don't like dwelling on it. I will post an occasional picture on Facebook.  The project will be long.....probably at least two months as Ron and I have decided to go ahead and do the things to the kitchen we have dreamed of for years. For example, the air conditioning will be redone to create a much cooler space for me to cook in.......I am a baker and I need it cool! Ha.

Also considering taking the kitchen space part way into the family room...which is large. So, for the time being, I am busy with planning and dreaming....reading tons of books.

Hope you all are doing well. Have a wonderful and blessed weekend. ♥

  1. Good for you! I would kill for a spacious kitchen and yes, one that is cool. :) I know it will be difficult to go through these "growing pains" but oh my, will it ever be worth it! The rewards will be huge.

  3. Oh my I do know what you are dealing with. About 15 yrs ago in our other home we gutted the kitchen and made it bigger and my hubby did the work entirely by himself and we only had 6 weeks to do it before the cabinets were delivered. Many late nights of working no electric in there nothing it went from 2x4's to drywall in a matter of two or so weeks and then once that happened it seemed like it just moved so quickly. In my case there were 4 young children and it was the middle of winter lay off time. So no escaping the mess. When all is said and done it was my dream kitchen and I sure do miss it now in this house. I can't wait to see your pics and how you fix it all up.

  4. You'll get there in the end. Some people would move rather than remodel, but that view and the memories you've made in thirty years are worth any amount of mess and inconvenience.

  5. I've been wondering how the kitchen was coming! It will be worth it when it's finished and you stand there and admire it all. I wanted a chandelier for my sink too. Mine is just an expensive white one from Home Depot and my husband kept showing me "kitchen" pendents and asking me, Are you sure? I insisted and now everyone comments on it. And I get to hang old silver balls on it at Christmas!

I bet your husband is needing plenty of shoulder rubs after working on that ceiling!

  6. Dear Barb, I agree with your hubby as you should go with what you know works for you. I'm sure you will find just the 'right' chandelier! The fun part is in the hunt to find it. So many choices. One thing about home renovations, you can't finish until you get started. Soon you will be sitting at the table sipping a ice tea!
    Hang in there..

  9. I can't wait to see your finished pics. I know it will be just beautiful. We had our bedroom gutted last year, The contractor asked if we wanted the ceiling raised. I said, "Yes" I knew it would cost more, but I sure don't regret that decision, It instantly made our bedroom seem so much larger. 37 years ago, we had taken that same ceiling/roof off ourselves (well, hubby did) he took off half the roof and put in a dormer...by himself, Yes, I helped carry supplies, clean up endless dust, but this time (we're old) we needed a contractor. It did get done a bit faster this time with someone else doing the work, but it still seemed like forever at the time, but oh so worth it now.

  10. I am so excited for you! I am also very glad you were so quick to recognize that you and the kitchen design center weren't on the same page. They are good at selling you something you do not want! I am eager for the finished result. Two months is such a short time for a lifetime of enjoyment!
